My experience with baby modeling
My seventh month old has just been signed with Future
Stars agency here in Seattle.
They wanted to see her in person to get a sense of her personality
and how well she responds to strangers.
(There are a lot of cute babies, but to be successful as models, they also need
to have a certain amount of "sparkle" that will come across in the ad and
which will give the photographers something to work with.)
Once they decided they wanted to represent Leia, I had to have pictures taken,
from which they compiled a "zedcard" -- a folded over brochure which shows
three pictures of her, along with her statistics (eye color, hair color,
length, weight, and clothing size, plus her birthday). 100 of these were printed,
and we paid for the pictures as well as the zedcard printing.
When a casting director calls teh agency, the agency will send out the
zedcards of the babies who fit the characteristics which they are looking
for. THen the casting director will tell the agency which babies s/he
wants to audition. Only after going to an audition and passing that
hurdle will the baby be hired for a job.
Being signed with an agency doesn't guarantee your child will be hired
as a model, but it does include an agreement that you don't sign the child
with another agency without breaking off your relationship with the first.
That contract can be broken at any time, for any reason.
I was surprised to find out that although babies do change quickly,
the zedcards we just had done are supposed to be good for at least a year.
Evidently they will provide the casting director enough of a sense of the
child's appearance and personality to form a basis for them to ask for an
audition. Read More

child models are often asked to jump a flight to LA for an audition
It helps if you live in areas where photo shoots are prevalent,
LA and New York work. I'm not sure what the equivalent
cities in Canada would be. I live in the San Francisco area,
and child models from here are often asked to jump a flight
to LA for an audition.
Even if you make it through auditions and shooting or
filming, it is possible the pictures or scene will get cut.
After having the whole extended family gather around
the television to watch Malcolm in the Middle, we found
my nephew's scene, which took a week to film, landed
on the cuttting room floor. Read More

Child Actors: Sisters win in Hollywood
Two Rock Creek Forest Elementary School sisters will fly to California this weekend for a red-carpet Hollywood awards show, where they will be guests of honor.
The Flores sisters, Rockzana, 10, and Sabrina, 9, are child actors from Silver Spring who recently won a national award for their interests outside the acting world, bucking the troubled child actor stereotype.
The sisters volunteer at a women’s homeless shelter, earn good grades and play sports.
However, when they began acting two years ago, industry pressure briefly encroached on their happy family.
Sabrina was the sister who first began pestering her mother, Jazzlyn, 42, for acting classes. She wanted — and still wants — to be an actress.
Rockzana was only tagging along. But she quickly won her first role, as a crying child in a domestic violence public service announcement. Read More

Modeling Infants/Toddlers
Has anyone had experience having their child modeled for print or
television ads??
Specifically-National Talent Associates??
Curious if there are any stories out there, good or bad.
Thanks in Advance,
Pat
My son is a baby model and we have had mostly good experiences. On one
occasion however during an audition for a McDonald's commercial, the ad
people squeezed his face rather roughly -- which turned out to be the
key "joke" in the commercial. My wife intervened angrily and that was
it: "Next!" (We're vegetarians anyway, bad karma...) That was about the
worst of it. Conversely, sometimes the catering at these things is quite
excellent...
As a Canadian, I don't know anything about National Talent Associates,
but one word of warning: if an agency asks you for money, for example to
make your kid a "portfolio", it's a scam -- it may be legal, but it's
still a scam. A real reputable agency wants only snapshots of your child
to ascertain whether they have the look they want and then gets paid by
taking a percentage of what the child makes (often 15%). Also, in Canada
at least, the money is legally the child's in order to discourage
parents from exploiting their children. We plan to wind the whole thing
down when he gets to school.
I had mixed feelings when we started but in the end it has been fun and
the money is a great nest egg for college etc -- money that we wouldn't
have been able to save otherwise. And it certainly is a blast to see
your baby plastered everywhere, and to then shamelessly brag to all and
sundry. When I opened the newspaper on my birthday and there he was, on
two full-page ads, it was pretty incredible. Read More

How to Get Your Child Started in Modeling
Do you want to get your child into modeling for print ads, fashion shows and catalogues?
To know everything there is about the field of modeling will fill a book shelf.
Presented here is a basic overview to help educate you on what can be expected when you make that “step” into the field of child modeling.
Modeling for children is a career; it is neither easy nor immediate. You need to prepare yourself and your child.
NOTE: Children that are shy and have to be coaxed to interact naturally with new people don’t usually make good models. Kids should be comfortable in front of the camera. No matter how cute or perfect for modeling your child is, if he or she is shy and freezes up, you may want to reconsider.
When I am casting for a project, I have talent bring me photos, lots of recent photos if they have no experience. In addition to looking for the type or look I need, I use photos tell me if the person is photogenic, if they enjoy being in front of the camera and whether they can be animated and versatile.
You as the parent have to prepare yourself as well. You need to educate yourself since you will be involved in the process every step of the way
..................
Successful child models are outgoing, love the camera and have no problems meeting and working with diverse people and situations.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
1- Talk to your child, make sure that they understand what it takes to be a model and make sure this is something your child wants.
2- Break out your camera and take clear photos of your child, take them over a couple of weeks. Take clear head and shoulder headshots and full body shots. DO NOT take pictures in your living room, bedroom or anywhere the background shows the interior of your home. Take your photos against plain backgrounds.
Consider going to the park or a place where your child enjoys and take shots making sure the background is not cluttered.
Fill the frame of your photo with your child. (The point of these pictures is to take pictures of your child not the scenery.) You can add in a few props such as a basketball for a boy , a girl school books or sporting gear is one idea. Read More

Child Modeling-What You Must Know!
Pierson promoted himself as a child modeling photographer.
When parents would leave their child with Pierson for a photography session, he would dress the children in adult lingerie, and in sexually explicit poses, photograph them, and subsequently sell those images to a "child modeling" website in Florida for Internet posting.
Many of the parents were unaware of the images being taken of their children, and some had signed over temporary legal custody of their child to Pierson during the modeling session. Read More

Could Your Baby Be A Model?
Could you child be a magazine cover model? While every baby is beautiful, there are certain traits that agencies are looking for when it comes to choosing the right face to grace the cover of their latest issue. Judy Nolte, Editor-In-Chief of American Baby Magazine, has some tips about breaking into the big time.
One major factor that agencies look for during a model search is an easy-going, social child. Great temperament is key, according to Nolte. "A studio shoot is full of strangers," she says, so a shy baby who cries easily isn't going to do well in that type of situation.
Agencies also look for a child who's personality comes across well on film. People want to see happy, smiling, engaging babies on magazine covers and within a magazine's articles. A child who looks natural in front of the camera is best. Read more

Ambitious Child Models
China's pushy parents are shunning traditional ambitions for their children and have a new profession they hope their kids will conquer - modelling.
Stiff competition for top universities have parents fretting more than ever over their child's future.
So in a bid to find a new niche in which their children can succeed, parents are turning to the catwalk instead.
Mothers at China's most prestigious modelling school at New Silk Road spent the day ahead of curtain call at a Beijing shopping mall fussing over the children and putting the finishing touches on pink cheeks and glossy lips.
More than 100 contestants, none older than about 13, are taking part in two days of competition to show off their skills. Read More

Child Modeling: Do personal managers really help?
"My 6 year old daughter met with National Talent Agency last night. They
are personal managers. Do personal managers really help? Or would I be
better off doing it on my own? They said that they submit with the
William Schuller (sp?) agency. Are the reputable? Please help I only
have 3 days to cancel the contract!! ........"
............." Schuller Agency is a reputable agency in New York City. There are
others who are better. It is my opinion as a children's fashion
photographer that a child has an equal chance of getting into an agency
being submitted from a parent as being submitted by a manager.
Agency personel are professionals in spotting potential talent and don't
necessarily rely on managers to bring in new talent.
Personally, I only hire from specific agencies and have disapointing
experiences with children on contract with managers and freelancing with

Never make the child feel as though modeling is something he/she has to do
What got us started is photo contests. You know the kind where you submit a professional, (like Kmart or Sears, nothing to fancy), photo of your child to be judged.
Walmart has one every year. That way your child is seen, but is not smothered. From there we got casted with an agency. He modeled for about 1 1/2 years, and decided he did not like it, so we stopped. That simple.
Never make the child feel as though it is something he/she has to do. My son, even though he was extremely young, (We stopped about six months ago, and he is three today) always knew that if he did not want to have his picture taken that all he had to do was let us know. He's been able to communicate his feeling for 2 years, (I don't want to say "talk"). All the money he made was put in a trust for him, so he will be able to go to college. read more

Baby Modeling Tips
" A typical baby modeling day might involve four hours in a waiting room and then making a few hundred dollars if your child is one of the few chosen for the shoot.
Needless to say, your child should be very patient. He/she does not need to be unusually attractive; small and young-looking for age helps.
But the cardinal rule of child modeling is that you do not ever pay a single penny of your money to any so-called "agency" for any reason whatever, nor do you patronize any photography studio to which they refer you. *They* pay *you*.
Before signing with an agency, get three references to families whose children have had successful modeling careers through the agency.
Confirm them by phone. The majority of posts we see on this subject are from parents who have been asked to front several hundred dollars for portraiture by companies that have never actually placed a child model. These companies simply prey on the vanity of parents. Read more

Real Child Modeling Agents Do Not Cost Anything
Real agents don't cost anything and you don't need professional photos before
seeing an agent. Photos you've taken will be fine. The agent shouldn't send
you someplace where you have to pay for photos. There are tons of scams in
this business, don't get taken. To find an agent, look in the yellow pages, or
at the agency names in the photo credits of parenting magazines, or in local
free parenting magazines you will usually find ads for agents (at least where
I live).
Its tons of work for the parents with very little pay. Many children don't
tolerate it well, lots of waiting. Different types of kids are *in style* at a
given time, so if your grandchild isn't accepted by an agency, it may just be
that they already have too many children who look similar, or clients aren't
looking for that type of child at that time.
To do much work, you need to live near a major city. But of course that means
more competition. Some parents are really into their child modeling and it
makes for some not so pleasant experiences. (Stereotypical stage moms.) Most
of the people I know who work with child models are very patient with the
children, but you might run into some who are not. You can always take the
child and leave. Read more
